Though I’m not (usually) big on romance, From Here and After caught my eye, mainly because of the cover. I decided to give this debut author a try.
“Farren Harmut is a wealthy surgeon living the good life in Las Vegas. He has everything—a successful practice, a beautiful villa, and a glamorous girlfriend. But his life is void of the one thing he secretly craves: love.
When Farren was ten years old, a mysterious girl saved his life. Years later, he finally finds her in the flesh, and all his dreams come true—but does she pose a threat to the people closest to him?
Saskia is different. From… somewhere else.
Suddenly, Farren has made a few enemies, both worldly and otherworldly. On the run from dark organizations and creatures from beyond, can Farren and Saskia’s connection withstand the horrors that threaten to tear them apart?”
When Farren was a child, she saved him from falling to his death. As an adult, despite his riches, Farren’s life is empty. He isn’t sure if the girl who saved him was real or a strange, fear-induced hallucination. Then he finds her… but it isn’t a simple tale of two people meeting and falling in love. Dangers, both worldly and otherworldly, threaten to tear them apart.
Donaire tells an original and enthralling tale of a rich surgeon who learns to love and a mysterious woman from another world. I was interested in Farren, who at first wasn’t a particularly kind or pleasant man, but grew as a person throughout the story, a nice touch I thoroughly enjoyed. Mystique is built around Saskia long before she’s introduced to us in her adult form, so we’re left wanting to know her and find out more about her along with Farren.
The pacing was great. We’re drip-fed details of the truth little by little, leaving us hungry for more. It has everything you could want in a story: questions that need to be answered, interesting characters, an (almost) invisible danger and action-packed scenes. I particularly enjoyed the last third of the book, where I was frantically turning the pages to see what would happen next.
If you love paranormal romance with mystery and moments that will tug on your heartstrings, look no further! I give this book four and a half stars out of five.
